Adi Balkan: health care activist, father and husband

Adi Balkan passed away on October 31, 2023 at the age of 50 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He was a healthcare activist, father and husband who lived and worked to improve healthcare for all.

Balkan was diagnosed in 2016 with ALS, a neurodegenerative disease that causes progressive muscle atrophy and weakness. After being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Barkan decided to use his remaining time to fight for the healthcare rights of others. He became a leader in the fight to save the Affordable Care Act and co-founded a nonprofit organization called Be A Hero to expand access to health care.

Kim Balkan, Balkan’s wife, said in a statement, “Adi was a wonderful father and husband and my life partner for 18 years. His fight for healthcare rights for all is his legacy. He wanted everyone to have access to the healthcare they needed, regardless of their financial situation.

Balkan’s passing is a great loss to the healthcare field. He was a courageous advocate who made indelible contributions to the fight for a fairer, more affordable health care system for all.
