FDA Spotlights STEM Superheroes in Honor of National STEM Day

In celebration of National STEM Day on November 8, the FDA is highlighting the incredible work that scientists and engineers are doing to protect public health using STEM. These “STEM superheroes” make significant contributions to ensuring the safety of our food and medicines.

The FDA has produced a series of videos showcasing the innovative and engaging STEM work its scientists do every day. The videos star FDA Chief Scientist Namandjé Bumpus and scientists from FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, and FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER).

FDA also recognized Paige Brown, an electrical engineer and FDA’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Program Manager, who recently received the government’s Professional Achievement Award at the BEYA STEM Conference.Brown plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of medical devices and protecting the public health. She also has extensive experience in researching, developing, and leading engineering education and workplace DEIB programs.

In her acceptance speech at the 2023 BEYA Gala, Brown thanked the mentors who helped launch her career in the federal government. She emphasized the importance of mentoring and outreach to foster a more inclusive and welcoming engineering culture.

FDA’s commitment to STEM is not limited to its employees. The agency also supports STEM education and outreach programs to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
