Newcastle United to Rebound After Borussia Dortmund Loss

Newcastle suffered their first defeat in the Champions League since returning to the competition after a 20-year absence, but Rio Ferdinand believes Eddie Howe’s side can still bounce back.

Felix Nmecha scored the only goal of the game for Borussia Dortmund at St. James’ Park, leaving Newcastle with just one point from their opening two group matches.

However, Ferdinand believes Newcastle have shown they are capable of competing at the highest level, and he is backing them to get results on the road to keep their knockout chances alive.

“They’ll be disappointed,” Ferdinand said on TNT Sports. “When the draw was made, I don’t think many people in this stadium expected Newcastle to go on and destroy PSG the way they did.

“But I think they would have expected to get something out of this game, even just a draw. I think today, based on chances, a draw would have been a fair result, but you do have to commend the Dortmund team that have come here.

“They were calm and cool under pressure when it mattered. Cleared their lines, and they were a threat all day today.

“I would say this Newcastle team will be in that dressing room disappointed because they had opportunities there, had chances, hit the woodwork a couple of times.

“But it’s not over by any means, they’re going to go away and they’ve got a team capable of going anywhere and winning.”

Ferdinand was joined by former Newcastle striker Les Ferdinand on the TNT Sports panel, and he agreed that Newcastle are still in the competition despite their defeat to Dortmund.

“They certainly can surprise everyone,” Ferdinand said. “I think when you look at the PSG game, it was everything you could have hoped for as a Newcastle fan and player on the night.

“Not every game is going to go that way. We knew this was going to be a tough game, Dortmund coming not having won, but they haven’t lost in the Bundesliga this season.

“You knew this was going to be a tough game, and it was a tough game. They’re a very, very good team and Newcastle will go back and lick their wounds, but as you said, they’re still in this competition.”

Newcastle travel to AC Milan in their next Champions League match on November 2, before hosting Dortmund in the reverse fixture on November 8.
