Simeone: Atletico play well in crucial win

Atlético de Madrid head coach Diego Simeone was delighted with his side’s 2-1 victory over Alaves on Sunday, praising his side’s performance and stating that the win was crucial.

Goals from Rodrigo Riquelme and Alvaro Morata secured the victory for the hosts and Simeone was particularly pleased with the support from the home fans.

“The team played a very good game and were in control until the 70th minute,” said Simeone. We were patient and tried to stick together, Riquelme started to show him what we needed and Morata scored a fantastic goal.

However, Simeone admitted his side were poor in the second half and that they could have controlled the game better.

“The second half seemed a bit long”, he said. Alaves changed us, but we didn’t control the game in the best way. The players who came on at the end could have given us more, as they have given us in other games, but this time they didn’t.

The match was Simeone’s 450th La Liga game in charge of Atletico and he said he was happy to be at the club for a long time.

“I’m happy,” he said. I’m happy in everything I do, I’m lucky because I have players who play for what they want and without them I couldn’t have kept my place now.
